Privacy Policy — Network TV Remote
This privacy policy describes how the Network TV Remote mobile application ("the App", "we", "us") handles information when you use it on your iOS or Android device.
The App is published as an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Koninklijke Philips N.V. or any television manufacturer.
1. Information we do not collect
We do not collect, transmit, sell, share, or otherwise process any of the following:
- Personal information (name, email, phone number, postal address)
- Account credentials
- Contacts, calendar, photos, or files
- Location data (GPS, IP-based geolocation, Wi-Fi positioning)
- Camera or microphone input
- Biometric data
- Health or fitness data
- Browsing or app-usage history outside the App
- Advertising identifiers (IDFA, GAID)
- Analytics or telemetry of any kind
- Crash reports
The App contains no third-party advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, or attribution SDKs.
2. Information stored locally on your device
To function as a remote control, the App stores the following on
your device using the operating system's standard local storage
(AsyncStorage on both platforms). This data
never leaves your device:
| What | Purpose |
|---|---|
| The IP address, port, and API version of TVs you connect to | So the App can reconnect automatically |
| An optional MAC address you may provide | For Wake-on-LAN power-on |
| An optional nickname you assign to a TV (e.g. "Living room") | Display label |
| The URL of an optional Wake-on-LAN HTTP relay you configure | Only used to wake your TV |
| The URL of an optional HDMI-CEC HTTP bridge you configure | Only used to send fallback commands to your TV |
This data is retained until you remove the TV from the Settings screen or uninstall the App.
3. Network access and how it is used
The App requires access to your local Wi-Fi network to discover and control your TV. On iOS, the operating system will prompt you to grant this access the first time the App runs. The App uses the local network only to:
- Send HTTP requests to your TV's built-in JointSpace API (typically
http://<tv-ip>:1925/6/…). - Send DIAL requests to your TV for launching pre-installed apps (e.g. Netflix, YouTube).
- Optionally call a Wake-on-LAN HTTP relay URL that you configure yourself to send a magic packet to your TV.
- Optionally call an HDMI-CEC HTTP bridge URL that you configure yourself as a fallback transport.
- Scan your local subnet (e.g.
192.168.1.1–192.168.1.254) on port 1925 during the explicit "Scan network" action to discover compatible TVs.
No outbound connection is ever made to any server operated by the developer or any third party. The App does not embed any backend, analytics service, ad network, or telemetry endpoint.
4. Permissions and why
iOS
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription (Local Network) | Required to send requests to your TV on your home Wi-Fi |
NSBonjourServices (_dial._tcp, _googlecast._tcp) | Used only to detect DIAL-capable devices on the same network during discovery |
Android
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
INTERNET | Required to send HTTP requests on the local network (Android does not separate "internet" from "LAN") |
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | Detect whether Wi-Fi is connected before scanning |
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE | Read the local subnet for scanning |
CHANGE_WIFI_MULTICAST_STATE | Receive multicast responses during SSDP/DIAL discovery |
VIBRATE | Subtle haptic feedback on button presses |
TRANSMIT_IR | Optional infrared control if your phone has an IR blaster |
The App requests no other permissions. It does not request access to camera, microphone, location, contacts, calendar, photos, files, notifications, or any sensor.
5. Children's privacy
The App is suitable for general audiences and is rated 4+ on the App Store. It does not knowingly collect any information from children, or indeed from anyone. No account is required, no profile is created, and no data is transmitted off the device.
6. Your rights
Because no personal data is collected or processed, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf. You can remove all data the App has stored about you at any time by:
- Removing a TV from Settings → Saved TVs → Forget, or
- Uninstalling the App from your device.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, California, or another jurisdiction with a comprehensive privacy law, your rights under those laws (e.g. GDPR Articles 15–22, CCPA §1798.100 et seq.) apply by default; given that no personal data is processed, requests to exercise those rights will be answered with a confirmation that no records exist.
7. Third-party services
The App does not embed or load any third-party service. Specifically, it includes no:
- Advertising network
- Analytics SDK (Firebase, Amplitude, Mixpanel, etc.)
- Crash-reporting service (Crashlytics, Sentry, Bugsnag, etc.)
- Authentication provider
- Push-notification provider
The only external party your phone communicates with as a consequence of running this App is your own television, on your own Wi-Fi network.
8. Data retention and security
All settings are stored on your device using the operating system's standard application-sandboxed storage. Apple's iOS and Google's Android each isolate this storage so that no other app can read it. Because no data is transmitted to a server, no data is retained off-device.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes (for example, if a future version of the App adds an optional cloud feature), the new policy will be published at the same URL and the "Last updated" date above will be revised. Material changes will additionally be announced in the App's release notes on the App Store and Google Play.
